“I didn’t want to be a product of my environment, I wanted my environment to be a product of me.” With a rewrite of the character of Frank Costello the script for The Departed started to line up much more with Martin Scorsese’s view of the world in the film and real life.
I talk about how Scorsese’s views on America’s response to 9/11 and the Iraq War led to a more heated, pointed film compared to his usual matter-of-fact style in my introduction for the film, which was given before a screening at The Little Theatre in Bath in August 2026, as part of Picturehouse’s Scorsese season.
